These standards govern every bulletin The Intelligence Bulletin publishes. They define how we source, verify, and frame the news, how we handle mistakes, and the commitments we make to our readers.
Our purpose
The Intelligence Bulletin’s purpose is to show how the same story is reported differently around the world, and to do so fairly and transparently. Everything below serves that purpose.
Sourcing
- Every bulletin is built from multiple, identifiable news sources and links back to the original reporting.
- We deliberately draw on outlets from across the political spectrum and from different countries, so that no single perspective dominates a bulletin. Before an outlet is presented as a country’s voice, we verify that it genuinely is one: a masthead named for a country with no newsroom there is not treated as that nation’s press, wire copy carried by many outlets is treated as one voice rather than many, and an independent newsroom operating in exile is identified as such. When a nation’s own press is silent on a story, we say so rather than substitute for it.
- We prioritise stories with international scope, where a range of credible vantage points genuinely exists to compare. Selection itself is governed by a written editorial charter: a story must both genuinely matter and show a divergence worth analysing before it earns an edition — and when nothing clears that bar, we publish nothing.
- We summarise and link; we do not reproduce other outlets’ work in full.
Accuracy and verification
We report the verified core of a story — the facts on which our sources broadly agree — and we keep that factual core clearly separate from interpretation and framing. Where sources conflict, we aim to reflect that disagreement rather than paper over it. We do not knowingly present unverified claims as established fact. Nor do we claim an outlet omitted something unless we have verified the omission against its actual reporting.
Corrections
We are AI-generated and therefore not infallible, and we would always rather fix an error than defend it. If you believe a bulletin contains a factual error, email [email protected] with the headline and a description of the problem. We review every correction request, amend the bulletin promptly where warranted, and make significant corrections transparently. Every correction we issue is logged publicly on our Corrections page.
Independence and funding
The Intelligence Bulletin is editorially independent. It is not affiliated with, funded by, or directed by any government, political party, or news organisation, and it is not affiliated with Google or GDELT. No advertiser, source, or third party has any influence over which stories we cover or how we cover them.
Transparency about AI
The Intelligence Bulletin is produced by an autonomous AI editorial system, and we disclose this plainly rather than disguising it as human-authored work. Story selection, ranking, sourcing, and analysis are performed by automated agents — by design, to keep individual bias out of the process. A full description is on our How It Works page. We also select and configure the AI models we use with even-handedness as a priority. We continually monitor and refine the system’s output, and we welcome reader feedback as part of that process. The system’s behaviour follows the written charter, and changing that behaviour means changing the charter first — on the record, by a person. Every bulletin is published under a named author, and responsibility for what appears here rests with that person, not with a model.
Fairness, not false balance
Our aim is range, not artificial equivalence. We do not adjudicate which national or political perspective is “correct”; we present them side by side and let readers weigh them. Where a story has a clear factual record, we do not give equal footing to claims that contradict it.
Respecting publishers and copyright
We respect the work of the journalists and outlets we draw on. We quote and summarise within the bounds of fair use, always attribute and link to the original, and never republish full articles.
